If the thought of buying your children Halloween costumes made with questionable materials in a foreign sweatshop has you red in the face, get this year’s costumes the green and old-fashiond way: at a swap.
National Costume Swap Day, a partnership between national nonprofits Green America (greenamerica.org) and Green Halloween (greenhalloween.org), celebrates its third annual event on Oct. 13. Last year, out of 320 participating events around the nation about a half dozen were held locally, including those in San Rafael, Antioch and Palo Alto.
This year, campaign director Elizabeth O’Connell is expecting even more Bay Area participation, thanks to the organization’s promotion by the American Library Association.
“National Costume Swap Day is a great program that’s catching people’s attention because of how green and practical it is,” she explains. “Not only does a swap save families money on a one-time-use purchase, it prevents additional products from being manufactured in unhealthy conditions only to be thrown away when the season’s over.”
To find a swap nearest you or to start one in your community, visit costumeswapday.org.
