I recently converted a small space under a staircase into my home office. Because of its limits, I knew I had to make it efficient, clutter-free and inspiring.
Everyone has a unique way of working. The trick is learning how to organize according to your personality. Here are five tips to help.
Invest in an adjustable keyboard tray and a good chair with arm rests that can be adjusted in multiple ways. Overhead lighting should be diffused and well-distributed, but not on the computer screen. For more tips, visit safecomputingtips.com.
Some people are happy to file paperwork in drawers; others prefer to have stacks of paper grow around them. In this case, put some stackable file trays on your desk, label them in broad terms and direct paperwork there. You still may have to sort through paperwork, but at least you’ll be looking in right area.
Prevent pre-approved credit card offers by visiting optoutprescreen.com. Reduce the onslaught of catalogs by visiting catalogchoice.org. A good shredder will take care of the rest of the junk mail. Prioritize the “real” mail with one file for items requiring immediate attention and another for items that can wait. Direct bills to their own folder or bin.
If you plan to use one, make sure it’s large enough to accommodate everything. Give it purpose. For example, put things requiring immediate attention here. That way, items get cycled regularly – and you actually use it.
Sometimes, there simply isn’t a place for every little thing. Designate a drawer or an attractive box to collect the odds and ends that have no home.
